Bemis was a global company producing advanced packaging for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Its footprint was mainly in Europe. In 2019 it was acquired by USA-based Amcor to become the global leader in its sector.
From a transactional towards a controlling role
In 2018, Bemis was restructuring its finance operations, moving towards a shared service center for operational activities, and shifting the finance teams in its European manufacturing plants from a transactional to a controlling role. Together with Finance and HR executives, we blended our Controlling Skill Framework and vision on controlling excellence with the in-house vision on controlling, and with existing HR frameworks and guidelines.
A tailor-made 9-day controlling program
The result was a tailor-made 9-day controlling programme for the European controller team. Eighteen topics were distributed over four modules lasting 2 or 3 days each. Out of eighteen topics, three were given by Bemis HR personnel, ten were about hard skills, and five were about soft skills. Each of the four modules was given in a local manufacturing plant and combined with a team-building activity between the controlling team and other Bemis teams.
Of the four modules in total, three have been given, in Belgium, Finland, and the UK. Module four, to be given in Northern Ireland, awaits completion of the Amcor integration and Brexit.
